Elephant Orphanage
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located 13 km northwest of Kegalle town in the southern province of Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation in order to provide care and protection to the orphaned wild elephants found in the Sri Lanka forests. About 100 elephants of three generations live now in the Pinnawalla – the largest herd of captive elephants in the world! Today the Orphanage is one of the most favorite tourist attractions in Sri Lanka, because everyone can:
- ride an elephant;
- feed animals;
- and even – wash them here!
Pinnawala is located on a picturesque coconut plantation adjacent to the Maha Oya River.
