Dambulla (The Golden Temple)
In the town of Dambulla, 148 km away from Colombo, the most famous Buddhist cave temple in Sri Lanka is located. The Golden Temple is under the protection of UNESCO.
The temple was carved into the rock back in the I century BC. The world’s largest collection of Buddha statues – 153 copies – is kept in temple’s five caves. Many of them are more than 2,000 years old! The temple is called “golden” because 73 statues which are situated there are covered with gold..
The Buddhist mural painting is a true treasure of the temple. Frescoes on the walls and ceiling reflect main parts of the Buddha’s life: birth, renunciation of royal life, the Enlightenment, seven weeks after irradiation, the reading of the first sermon, passing into nirvana.
The temple complex is situated on top of the mountain.
Golden temple is a sacred place for pilgrims for 22 centuries!
