Kandy
Kandy, or Senkadagalapura, was founded in the XIV century. This ancient capital of the island is located in the mountain range of the central part of Sri Lanka. Since 1988, Kandy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the center of the city, on the banks of a lake Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is situated This is a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists all over the world. Dalada Maligawa was built in the XVIII century, specifically for the storage of priceless relics – the Tooth of the Buddha. The tooth appeared on the island in 371. In the past, only a king chosen monks had access to the shrine, , but today you can take a look at the stupa as well. The temple is decorated with painted ceilings, decorated with silver and ivory doors, wood carvings. Apart from the Tooth, there are great sculptures in the temple: Buddha made of solid emerald, Buddha of crystal and jade, gold Buddha, as well as a collection of ancient manuscripts. In the center of the lake on the island the Royal Summer Palace was built, where Sri Vikrema Radzhasinghe kept his harem. Nowadays a museum is held in there. Beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens are located near the town. Trees of epic proportions, the collection of wild orchids and much more will surprise you for sure. On the way to Kandy, you will see a pineapple plantation, rubber grove, tea factory, where you can buy quality tea, and famous Elephant Orphanage. Contact me:
